Some pub gardens are worth taking the scenic route for. Walk or cycle along the Exe Estuary Trail, paddle up to the pontoons by the lock gates, or simply come for a long lunch beside the water. There’s bike parking outside, a car park on site and Marsh Barton train station is around a 15-minute walk away.
Once you’re here, take your pick of waterside tables and grassy spots, or settle under our covered, heated stretch tent when the weather has other ideas. Dogs and families are welcome, and there’s plenty of room to spread out. Grab a cold pint and something from the pub menu; and in the summer months, the Burger Shack fires up too.
Walk-ins are always welcome. Come by and make a day of it.
Find your spot by the water, stretch out on the grass or settle under our covered, heated stretch tent. There’s room for bigger gatherings in the marquee, too. When the warmer months roll around, the outdoor bar and Burger Shack make it all too easy to stay for another round.
Our pub is just a 40-minute paddle from Exeter Quay. The calm canal waters make for a leisurely trip, with plenty of scenery and wildlife to enjoy along the way. When you arrive, pull up at the pontoons on either side of the lock gates and join us for a well-earned pit stop.
This beautiful, fairly flat ride follows both sides of Devon’s Exe Estuary, with lovely river and estuary views along the way. The trail passes right by our garden, and you’ll find plenty of bike racks outside the pub. Lock up, pop in and refuel.
Keep an eye on the water while you’re in the garden. Swans and ducks are familiar sights along the Exeter Ship Canal, while dragonflies dart about in warmer months. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the bright blue flash of a kingfisher.
